Before anything else, I am sure you will have one question: What is The Mandela Effect? I will try to explain it to you and give you some examples but after, it is your turn to decide what is real and what is not.
An Explanation in Simple Words
The Mandela Effect is just a memory. It is a memory of something that you are very sure happened and you can even remember clearly the details, but actually it never happened. Not in this time -line.
Usually a group of people, strangers, remember the same thing and in reality, this thing is totally different. So it is not a dream. If you were the only one to remember this, ok, but there are a lot of people. So, may this be a memory from a parallel reality?
In psychiatry, it is a phenomenon in which many people have the same false memory of something which happened in the past.
When did this theory start?
This theory actually started in 2010 when Fiona Broome, a Blogger, and paranormal enthusiast said that she surely remembered Nelson Mandela’s death in a South African prison in the 80s. Along with her a big number of other people also remembered this event .They even claimed to have learned about it in school. Fiona had clear memories of Mandela’s funeral on a news channel.
Actually, Nelson Mandela died in 2013 from a respiratory infection, in Houghton, Johannesburg, in his home.
What was her explanation?
Broome, trying to explain this phenomenon claims that these false memories shared by many people with no evidence that they ever happened, may this be an occasional interaction of parallel words, parallel timelines.
We have evidence of these interactions found in our common false memories, and the death of Nelson Mandela is not the only example.
Mandela Effect Examples
I will give you a few classical Mandela effect examples and see if you are familiar with one of these. Tell me later 🙂
Of course, the first and the most important is the death of Nelson Mandela. As I said before, a large number of people remember him dying in the 80s in prison, and even remember even the ceremony on TV. The reality is that he died in 2013.
Another example is the spelling of the famous cartoon show ‘The Berenstain Bears’. Many people remember the name spelled The Berenstein Bears’. How do you remember it?
Of course, we have some other spelling examples as McDonald’s (real) or MacDonald’s, Looney Tunes (real) or Looney Toons. To be honest talking about the last one, I always remember it as Looney Toons.
Also, Fiona Broome discovered other facts in history where some people remember a different version. For example, the protester who in 1989 in Tiananmen Square defied the tanks, they remember he was killed by them. This group of people even claim that were taught about this historical moment in school.
How others explain this effect
Elizabeth Loftus, a famous psychologist explains in 1978 that memories can be changed. A psychological theory is that the memory is constructive not reproductive as we think.
So what this mean? Our brain builds our memories from small different pieces of information and they can be changed, destroyed, by some factors as imagination, association, and others.
What do we understand from this? Memories can be fallible and not pure at all. So can this be the explanation for the Mandela Effect? But now, my personal question…how can be the same mistake be made by many people, the same false memory?
Maybe a psychologist can give us a scientific explanation but again, for me, it is still a mystery. Ok, some facts can be misremembered from a person but how can you explain that a big group of people misremember the same thing?
Maybe because I am a time travel passionate, I believe in the multiple universes and parallel existence theory but I still believe that …that out there, there is something more …
I personally think that for a big number of people to misremember the same things maybe in another time line, that at some point interacted with ours, their memories were true.
Maybe Nelson Mandela really died in the 80s in another world line and maybe there Looney Tunes is written Looney Toons 🙂
What do you think? Do you have any memory that you are 100% sure that happened and you even remember details but it actually never happened?
I would like to tell you something that a friend of mine told me. He remembered going on a school camp with his sister when they were teens but later his sister didn’t remember anything about this, and he was also sure that they took some things from there, some stone collections and also she didn’t know anything about this.
So… when my friend asked me how I explain this …I just said…Mandela effect 🙂
Thanks for reading and I am waiting for your comments:)

I am from South Africa and remember all the detail of his death. Maybe it is a deja vu thing or just memory thing. My dad says the older you get the more you forget.Respect yes.. That will always be the same .
yes but here is not about forgetting, is about remembering:)So you do remember Mandela dying in 80s? It is not a deja vu. it is ..Mandela Effect:)maybe is your memory from another timeline.it is not an age thing. It is really strange…So what exactly you do remember about his death?
I think another example of the mandela effect would be how many people remember the children’s book series “bearstein bears” as being spelt that way, but in reality it’s actually “bearstAin bears”.
I have thought it was the first one myself. seems it’s something that mainstream science cannot explain.
you are right about Bearstain Bears. So how you remember the spelling? Thanks for reading and i am happy that you did enjoy my post. if there is something else you would like to know..just ask me. Do you think Mandela Effect has a psychological explanation or..just memory from other timeline?
in addition to my other comment I wanna tell you an experience I had in 2010. I was at work alone and entered a room using my access card, after I entered the room I put the card in my pocket. literally 10 seconds later I reached in and it was gone. I looked everywhere but it just vanished. nobody believe me of course. but I think it’s the same kind of time warp opened paranormal thing going on.
This is strange. Did you finally finally found your card? You just got in and the card just gone? I do believe you and i don’t know what to say…If you are sure it didn’t fell somewhere,,,than definitely something happened.So..finally what did you do?
I didnt find it that night, I looked hours for it. I was alone working security so nobody could’ve picked it up. Also its a small area and theres nowhere for it to hide really. Whats stranger is that after that night I worked at another location then came back for a shift after 6 months. They said a gardener found my card outside in the bushes. I never even went near the bushes. This couldnt have happened also because an access card is needed to enter or leave the building. The night i lost the card i lost it inside…so how did it end up outside in the bushes?
And im 100% sure im not mistaken about these events because every entry or exit into that building is recorded on the security computer which i had full access to. And i looked it over at least 20 times and it was really clear… i was alone and i didnt leave the building once after i lost the card…
This is gonna sound even stranger but during that time i was trying techniques to open my third eye. And the night i lost the card was the one night i made some progress on this technique. I dont believe these events are random.
wow… This is really strange. I wonder how happened?Do you think you accessed another timeline? or…was a sudden change with your other self from another parallel timeline and he lost your card? How do you explain this?
I think it had something to do with my higher self, universe, source, “god”, some higher power – allowing me to experience this, so that for the rest of my life I’ll never think of this 3D earth realm the same way again. or maybe this world is a matrix and this was a glitch in the system. I’m open to any possibility… the only thing that I’m sure is not, is me dropping the card and not seeing it then someone else finding it and throwing it outside, which is the only explanation most would accept.
yes ..it is possible but..i don’t think such an important thing somebody will throw it on the window….anyway….nobody knows… i am also open to any possibility, to any version.thanks for reading 🙂
Even reading this I get a feeling that I’ve done it before ~ I don’t know about parallel time so I cannot really comment on that. However I do know I’ve read ‘Tarot’ cards and know things about people I cannot possibly know. I’m open minded enough to accept that my beliefs in relation to that, are just that ‘what I choose to believe’ to explain it. But maybe it’s parallel realities and in a different time I knew these people???
I also would have sworn it was Looney Toons??? How very intriguing and distracting lol (I’ll never finish the lessons at this rate in WA)
Thanks for the reading 🙂 I see you are another person who remembers Looney Toones:) So….You did also felt a Mandela Effect:) if you fell you read it before is a deja vu 🙂 I think it is a possibility to exist parallel universes but of course…I don’t have the proof and I am not 100% but i DO believe in this .
Thanks again for your interest and if you have any questions…Just ask 🙂
Hmm you got me thinking…I think I remember it Looney Toons. Maybe this is just because I associate it with cartoons and made up this memory in my mind but even now I feel like it should be spelled Looney Toons.
Me too Looney Toons i remember so…it is just a coincidence? What do you think? Thanks for reading 🙂 I hope you enjoyes my post:) and if you are interested in more…I am here:)So you did felt a mandela Effect:)
The most baffling one I remember is the one about Billy Graham funeral being on TV. I remember watch this on the TV when I was younger. But, apparently this guy was still alive. The Mandela effect is always interesting to read about. I even remember the Bernstein bear one. Very interesting article!
Thanks Liz:)) yes Mandela Effect is something that i would love to research more and of course as soon as i know more i will let you know 🙂 Billy Graham…e? I will have a look . Interesting! So you say you remember his funeral… Still many things we can’t totally explain. But psychologists gave an explanation for the Mandela effect. I will research more 🙂 Thanks .
Thanks for visiting my site and reading my post 🙂
Have a nice day.
I’ve never really heard about the Mandela effect. I guess the brain is amazing and has endless and strange ways to play us.
For instance, I’ve had many deja vu experiences, which I don’t know if they may be just my brain putting things together and building new and paralel realities for me or things that really happened before but I forgot somehow.
But when it comes to many people rememorating one same thing that actually didn’t happen, that blows my mind!
This is a really interesting article. It makes you realize how little knowledge we have of our own capacities. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Hello israel . As i said and to my friend Angie before human mind is amazing and i agree this can be a brain game but what will be your explanation for a huge number of people having the same memory?Isn’t strange? Thanks for reading my post and hope to have you back again:)
That’s so weird, I have that too – “deja vu” moments, like I’ve been there before and seen this already, when I come to that place first time ever. I also see that with some commercials and products, when they advertise like: “it’s brand new, never seen before, just invented!” and I’m like: noooo, I definitely seen this exact product before.
i think deja vu is a mind game and happen to me too many times but for a big number of people to see the same thing,,,,,i don’t know how to explain it . Thanks for visiting my site 🙂
When I was staying in this hindu temple volunteering program earlier this year, one of my buddies showed me this mandela effect thing and I started buggin out. The one which scared me the most was pikachus tail. I was confident that it has black on the end but apparently not. It is weird and it gives me the chills.
To be honest i also remember pikachu with a black end tail..It is really strange how human mind works eh?:)) .Thanks for reading my post :)) and you will find more things here that maybe interest you 🙂 Nice to meet you.
Thank you for believing. It’s frustrating when people aren’t seeing what your seeing. At first I just dismissed all these changes to bad memory or not paying attention to details, like does Chic-fil-a have a K or not. I spelled it without a K because I’m pretty sure it did not have one. But I never ate there until recently, so eh, I could be wrong. BUT THEN I ran into diverging that I KNEW FOR CERTAIN was spelled a different way than it is now. I KNOW THIS AS CERTAIN AS MY OWN NAME. And ironically it is associated with the Twilight Zone. Rod Serling is spelled wrong. It has ALWAYS been for my whole life… Rod STERLING. No doubt, no question, no chance I’m mistaken or wrong. That was one of my favorite shows growing up and for my whole life. And I have watched all of the episodes I don’t know how many times. His name is STERLING.
Yes i know also for sure is Sterling…I believe and i am trying to understand this Mandela Effect, is just a parallel reality memory or a game of our mind …a deja vu? What do you think?if you have more deja vu experiences you can share them with me. I would love to hear everything about it. Mandela effect…yes was Sterling!
Thanks for reading and i am glad that you found it interesting.
I’d like to mention two another phenomena that may be a Mandela effect.
“Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of us all?” Remember this line from Snow White? Except now that we look back, we realized it is “Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of us all?”
Pikachu’s tail used to be black at the tip, I remember that even though I don’t watch Pikachu. Except he didn’t have that now, so I was very confused when I saw a kid draw Pikachu without having a black-tipped tail.
No way, I clear know the story Mirror mirror on the wall ,not magic mirror. About pikachu.. i can’t help you because i don’t watch. but mirror mirror i am sure!
Thanks for giving me those examples of Mandela effect so don’t you think something is going on here? how can yopu explain this? You tell me that was magic mirror and I am 100% that was mirror mirror.
Thanks for visiting my site and I am glad that you enjoyed reading 🙂 have a good day.
I don’t even remember what I did yesterday. How can someone be 100% sure of their memories?
Your theory of parallel universes could be an explanation. You know sometimes I remember things that I think I probably dreamed about or have a strange feeling of deja vu.
About the Berenstain Bears, I think it depends. In my country, we learn Dutch at an early age and Beren means Bears in Dutch. I remember we always joked about the name “Bears Stain Bears”.
The Loney Tunes I definitely identify with. Does it probably have to do with subliminal messages in the pictures? Or is it a story of another timeline as you say?
The concept is fascinating to look into. Have you seen 12 Monkeys? The story I think includes concepts of the Mandela Effect and time-travel.
i didn’t see 12 Monkeys but i will . you made me curios:)
Mandela effect is something strange that many of us had felt and it probably can be a memory from another time line or when the two timelines interact to create something like this. it is a very interesting phenomena anyway and the fact that it sometimes is felt by groups of people is more intriguing. I think is not exactly the same with deja vu. Me I remember clearly Looney tunes. I don’t really know what to believe.
Thanks for visiting my site and stay close for updates:)
Have a good day Dira, nice to see you
