Great Time Travel Movies

-In this section of the website, I am going highlight some of the old great time travel movies.

Of course, the first one which comes to mind is the classic “The Time Machine¨ by H. G. Wells. Written in 1895 this still remains one of the all-time favorites. Since its release to the screens in the 1960s, it has inspired filmmakers and writers throughout the world. But what about some others?

Eighties

What left its mark on me as a child was the trilogy of ¨Back to the Future¨(Back to the Future1, Back to the Future 2, Back to the future3) with the first movie being first released in the U.S.A in 1985. As you probably know this was a great success and was followed by two sequels in which I think M.J. Fox gave wonderful performances throughout.

‘Somewhere in Time’( 1980),“The Navigator”(1988) and ¨Peggy Sue got married¨(1986) were also very successful around this time.Back To The Future

As we are aware, for over a century people have been dreaming about these kinds of journeys and their imaginations have created some remarkable and sometimes unbelievable stories.

The Modern Day

Coming back to the modern day, we can see that the ideas behind time travel have changed too. The machines and gadgets used have evolved in the movies but the basic concepts have remained the same.

We can see how these developments while watching some of the newer movies: ¨Looper” (2012) starring Bruce Willis, “Primer”, “Predestination (2014)”, “Project Almanac (2015)” are some good examples.

“Donnie Darko ( 2001)” is also an interesting film by Richard Kelly and was very successful and actually surrounds the concept of parallel universes.

Keanu Reaves and Sandra Bullock also display the idea of a parallel world in the movie “The Lake House”(2006).This movie has a very romantic side but still very touching and captivating.

Another nice movie is the “Butterfly Effect”(2004) starring Ashton Kutcher and also “The Jacket”(2005)  starring Adrien Brody which is certainly worth seeing. These are definitely worth your time and will take you on a journey and show you the capabilities of the human mind.

A Massive Following

As we can see, these concepts are an attraction to people from every walk of life. No matter what is your background the concept of time travel has a huge diverse following.

Thousands of children tried to imitate Harry Potter (2001) when these films took to the screens by grabbing a wooden stick pretending it was a magic wand. His adventures are now famous throughout the world for the new millennium when the first film was released.

There are a large number of films based on time travel with all of them using different methods in getting to the past or future. These Time Travel Box Officemachines have ranged from a refrigerator and a DeLorean car to Doctor Who’s Tardis. Black Holes have also been the focal point of time travel in the movies theaters and some of them use just the power of the human mind to get the story across to the audience.

Regardless of the method or the time in question, they all display one key ingredient. They prove that people are dreaming and wanting to know if time travel is or will ever be truly possible.

Even in the comedy genre, you can see this kind of journey, ¨A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s court¨ (1949) and “Hot Tub Time Machine” (2010) are evidence of this and there are many others that offer great viewing.

These movies have audiences from all generations and will continue to do so for years to come.

Question

What do you think is the reason that all these movies were successful and will always be? Why if you hear about a new time travel film ready for release, you can’t wait to watch it?

Maybe all of us dream that we could have this power one day to see or travel to the past and future? Or maybe because it remains a mystery if it will ever be possible or not and what new ideas may lead us to further proof it can be achieved?

When we watch these movies, and I am talking from my personal experience here, we put ourselves in the actor or actresses shoes. We live the story and the moment with them. Me personally after watching a time travel film, I need a few minutes to come back to the real world afterward.

I think the fantasy of the human mind has no limits. Within our minds we can travel wherever we want and whenever we want.

Sometimes our jobs, financial difficulties, and responsibilities in real life can lead us to want to find escape in our lives and traveling in time can be a perfect way out for an hour or two.

Each person is, of course, different and this is only my point of view. Some people are fascinated by these time travel movies from a scientific point of view. Others make it their career in the way of science to find the truth.

When I think of time travel movies I think of Back To The Future. I am sure most people do, though. The Butterfly Effect was one of my all time favorite movies. It was interesting to see how everything changed with just a couple small changes.

I haven’t heard of the Lake House, but I watched a trailer on it YouTube and it certainly looks like something I would like though.

Hot Tub Time Machine was ridiculous though! I did enjoy it.

Interesting you mention the Lake House, I found their take on time travel so unique. To think that the characters didn´t actually ´travel in time’, but found a communication loophole through it makes for an amazingly interesting story. I have watched the movie about 3 times now. I also love time travel and was taken by their approach! Sandra Bullock is awesome 🙂 Cheers!

Time travel is so interesting to me. I think it is because it can sometimes be maddening not to know what the future holds, and what we may or may not be missing. This is why I think Back to the Future was so cool because everyone, or at least me, would love to know what the future will bring, either good or bad (and if it is bad, change it).

I love time travel movies myself and of course Back To The Future stands as one of the all time greats.

I also fell in love with the 1960’s Time Machine adaptation of the HG Wells novel.

It is indeed a subject of massive interest and all of the films that become available soon have a big following.

Are there any new time travel films planned for release in the future?

    Thanks,, and great website 🙂

Whenever I think about time travel, I do think of back to the future which to me is are great movies that started the big trend.

Another show that I think about which is not time travel but is a spin-off of the concept was a show called sliders travelling through dimensions.

I like the time traveling movies and concept as it takes you out of the reality of the real world and puts you in a position of the unknown.

    Love the sci-fi movies.

I love the Back to the Future series and Back to the Future is my favorite movie of all time! I know some people are fascinated with time travel because they wish they had the ability to change their past in order to have a better future… but for me I just want to experience awesome moments in history that we can only read about now. Like pirates, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, The Renaissance, etc. I do hope there are some scientists at Harvard working on making time travel possible.

In answer to your question (rhetorical I know), I think for me, time travel is interesting because I know so many people who seem to be born out of their time – like they love classical music – but its heyday is at least 100 years and more. Or others like the styles of times past. And then there’s the future. I think maybe we are more scared than ever to think about the future with certain world events and we worry more than ever. It would be nice to imagine going back to a more simple time.

Cristina, I really enjoyed reading your post about time travel movies. The original “Back to the Future” is one of my favourite movies of all time. It is also highly nostalgic for me, because I was in high school during that time (so that movie really does take me back in time!). I enjoyed the sequels, but to me, they didn’t quite have the magic of the first. One movie that you mentioned, “The Butterfly Effect,” is one that I never had a chance to see, so I’m putting that one on my list.

I spotted an omission. Just did a site search and you definitely left out an excellent time travel movie….

    “Frequency”

It stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. Here’ s the synopsis form iMDB:

An accidental cross-time radio link connects father and son across 30 years. The son tries to save his father’s life, but then must fix the consequences.

It’s rated 7.3 although personally, i would have given it an 8. Nevertheless, if yu haven’t seen it, I think you would find it worthy of your pages here ate Your Time Travel Experiences.

    Cheers,

I agree with you that time travel is like an escape in our lives. Not only time travel but the whole science fiction genre in general(which I am a fan of) .

Somewhere in Time will always be my favorite time travel movie because it leaves science fiction out of it. The concept of willing yourself into another time is so different than most ideas or theories. The movie is based on a 1975 novel “Bid Time Return” which is also great. The music in this movie set the atmosphere, out of all the movies I have ever seen whether it be a time travel to the past or a movie that partakes in the past, this movie definitely placed you in that time in the most romantic captivating way. This movie may not appeal to today’s generation as it isn’t filled with crazy drama, lots of sex, lots of gore or lots of violence. This is movie that requires a little intelligence to fully understand it, something lacking in today’s time, so if you watch it and love it, then there is hope for you after all.

i love the way you think:). You are right, is a very romantic film and really take you in the past with his music. Is a great story and even if is made so long time before, is still a film that touches you, The time travel trip is beyond the science, teleportation and all these. Is the power of love and of human mind:) Thanks for reading and i agree with you that this is really missing from today generation.

The Back To The Future Series is one of my favourite trilogies. I love the idea of time travel, though thinking about it makes my brain hurt. Going into the future seems like a terrifying prospect in many ways, but if I could go a year into the future and check out all the sports results, I would know what to bet on when I came back and make loads of money. That said, I wonder if by simply knowing the future and then going back in time, my behavior would create causality ripples like in the butterfly effect and those sports results would change. It seems unlikely but it would be great to find out. This is what I spend a lot of time thinking about. Great post!

Hello and Nice to meet you. Yes, I think if you use the results and you change your life ,automatically you will create butterfly effect and things will go wrong. I think if you can go to see the future will be good to do it only for your information, not to use it. Me I rather go in the past:)) Thanks for reading 🙂
